Sleep mode eats battery faster than off/hibernate, and since the surface wakes faster from hibernate than off, use that. Use hibernate when not coming back to use the surface within an hour. If on, surface will wake from sleep and burn battery downloading big updates and installing them. That gets rid of any big background updates that remain and eat battery.
